His Past Catches Up in the Worst Way Possible
Sarah didn’t sleep.
Her phone screen lit up all night. Messages, likes, reposts. That kiss — her bold, public move — had taken over dorm group chats and even made it to a viral TikTok from someone at the party.
But none of that mattered now.

She kept hearing Ella’s voice:
“He’s not as clean as he pretends.”
Morning came. The sky outside her dorm window was grey, like it knew something was about to break.
Sarah finally texted James:
“Come by. We need to talk.”
This time, when he knocked, it was just him.
He looked tired — almost like he hadn’t slept either.
“You saw her, didn’t you?” he asked.
Sarah nodded.

“She wasn’t supposed to be here,” he said. “We broke up months ago. It was messy. I didn’t think she’d transfer to the same school.”

“No,” James said quickly. “But I lied. About where I was staying. Who I was talking to. I let her think we had a future even when I was done.”
Sarah bit her lip.
“You’re saying you ghosted her — and now she’s warning me?”
James looked away.
“Something like that.”

“I’m here. I swear.”
But then his phone buzzed.
A text. Sarah saw the name flash:
Ella.
James grabbed the phone too fast — too defensive.
Sarah stood. “You said it was over.”
“It is,” James said. “She just doesn’t want to believe it.”
But doubt was already crawling in.

Sarah looked at the sky, then whispered,

Lexi handed her a soda. “Then maybe it’s time he proves it.”
Just then, Ella walked by. Alone. Head high. No words.
But she dropped something near Sarah’s feet — a folded piece of paper.
Sarah picked it up.
It was a screenshot. Of a chat. From two days ago. Between James and Ella.
And it ended with:
“Don’t worry, she doesn’t know a thing.”
